The Oil Converter

This page enables you to convert values in commonly used oil measurements. Enter the initial value in the "Value" box, then click the appropriate "Original Units" button. The converted values will appear in the "Conversions" boxes. Note: put only numbers and the decimal point in the box, no commas or letters.)

For example, you find that the world's oil production in 2004 was 80,260 thousand barrels daily and you want to know what that was in gigabarrels per year. Enter 80260 in the "Value" box and click the "Barrels/Day" button (the original value). The value that appears in the "Barrels per Year" field is 29,294,900 (actually 29,294,900,000 because the value we put in omitted the thousand). This value divided by 1,000 million gives us 29.3 gigabarrels.

1 barrel of oil = 42 US gallons ≈ 34.9723 UK gallons ≈ 158.99 liters ≈ 0.1364 tonnes

1 gigabarrel = 1 thousand million barrels
